Advent Carol – Now It’s Time to Light the Candle

(PDF with music available here)

Now it’s time to light the candle,
Soon God’s promise will be here.
Young and old we wait together
For the Savior drawing near.

Refrain:
Light will overcome the darkness:
See the hope the Christ Child brings.

Now it’s time to light the candle,
Messengers prepare the way.
Wolf and lamb lie down together;
Righteousness marks God’s new day.

Refrain:
Light will overcome the darkness:
Live the peace the Christ Child brings.

Now it’s time to light the candle,
In God’s name we will rejoice.
Bells and organ play together,
We will shout in one loud voice!

Refrain:
Light will overcome the darkness:
Sing the joy the Christ Child brings.

Now it’s time to light the candle,
Shining love in Jesus’ name.
When all people join together
Earth will never be the same.

Refrain:
Light will overcome the darkness:
Be the love the Christ Child brings.

Hymns, Mark 4:26-34, Matthew 13:31-33, Mustard Seed

Mustard Seed – a hymn text

mustard treeBecause both the Mark and Matthew lections about the mustard seed come up in summer, I looked for a hymn to match that would be singable for a smaller or less musically enthusiastic congregation. I wrote this hymn text to be sung to NEW BRITAIN (Amazing Grace). Other Common Meter (CM) tunes that fit well are AZMON and LAND OF REST.

You are welcome to use it with credit; let me know where in the comments. Thanks!

“Mustard Seed”

Oh, once there was a mustard seed
Almost too small to see.
I planted it and watched it grow
Into a spreading tree.

The tree became a home for birds;
The branches held their nests.
The birds they came from miles around
to find a place to rest.

But mustard seeds will never grow
Into such spreading trees
We tell the tale so we will know
God’s kingdom yet to be.

How can we live our lives today
to be the mustard seed?
We’ll share God’s love with all we meet
and help the ones in need.

Oh, once there was a mustard seed
Almost too small to see.
I planted it and watched it grow
Into a spreading tree.

Mustard Seed in Song

Three years ago I found I wanted to have the congregation sing something about this coming Sunday’s gospel text, and particularly the mustard seed, but I just didn’t find anything singable enough for a smaller summertime congregation. “Amazing Grace” came to mind as a particularly singable hymn tune, and this was the result. We’ll be singing it this week, and I’m happy to share it if it might be useful.
