I Sing the Body Electric

For the past few days I’ve been waking up with numbness in both hands and a tingly back, though it hasn’t been painful at all. Today I decided calling the doctor might be in order, and to my amazement I got an appointment on the same day. (Probably because travel was bad today and other people canceled.)

I explained my symptoms, and my wonderful doctor (a gal a bit younger than I am) got right up on the examining table behind me to check out my back.

"You’re a little tense," she noted.

Um, yeah.

"I’m wound pretty tight," I told her.

"Me, too," she responded with a smile.

Her diagnosis: no disc involvement, just tense and tired and overused.

Her prescription: a massage.

Oh, my glory.

My regular massage therapist is in Florida until April 6th, so I called the person my doctor recommended and made an appointment for Friday.

Then I had a thought, a brilliant thought. I called the Day Spa where I go for various beautifying and relaxing activities from time to time. "Could you tell me when you next have an open massage appointment?"

"Hmm. How about 4 o’clock?"

It was 3:20.

Oh, my glory.

Once again, I scored due to the cancellations of others.

I am now following part two of my doctor’s prescription: heat.

What have you done to take care of yourself today?

  1. Uh. Hide in my office with the door closed in an attempt to hide from the racket the landscaper guys are making outside?
OK. I’ll get back to you next week when it’s over.

  2. Um…read some blogs.
My real question is: if I can get my doctor to prescribe a massage, does that mean the insurance will pay for it?
    Hope you’re feeling better.

  3. So glad you got that massage! Also, I’m glad that you don’t have any disc problems or something else like that. I am having a massage tomorrow!

  4. wow, I had a funeral and three Lenten services today. I am going to bed, and that’s what I’m doing to take care of myself. I have a terrible backache, and I think I’ll give myself a 1/2 hour lee-way in going to church.

  5. I needed this reminder…terrible headache yesterday and I know it’s the “wound up” thing.
I AM starting yoga classes on Monday…and in the meantime, a massage, yeah!

  6. I spent a hideous sum on 2 new pairs of glasses…but the frames are v cool, I think, so I’m looking forward to wearing them. I also bought a pink suitcase to take to the B.E….and if that’s not looking after myself, I don’t know what is 🙂

  7. Some insurances will cover it and massages can be taken off your income tax as a medical expense.
All I did to take care of myself yesterday was put one foot in front of the other to just get through the day.

  8. I came home last night and had a long hot bath, full of bubbles. This was highly amusing to Baby Cat, who sat on the side of the tub and ate the bubbles. (She ain’t a genius.)

  9. after a hard few days (see my blog) hubby and I are going out to eat, and then to see a film…yay..tomorrow is my day off..double yay!
    Hope you enjoyed the massage!

  10. I’m chiming in late, but last evening I took care of myself by cuddling on the Big Bed with two happy cats and an ice-pak for my head. I may have dozed off for a few minutes, but was awakened by whiskers brushing my face – Truffle was looking for a skritch under her chin.
I’m so glad you were able to see your doc and have a massage. I have booked for a week from today.

  11. So far today, I went to the gym before work and I have resisted the chips calling my name from the machine downstairs and will have a V-8 instead. I went to the art supply store on my way to work and bought supplies for one of my clients who is an inmate at the women’s prison. (Not really for me, but made me feel great.)

  12. Glad to hear it, Auntie Knickers!
This has been a long work day for me, and I haven’t really done anything much that fits this category. I am looking forward to Massage #2 tomorrow, however, as well as an evening of American Idol and Lost-watching with The Princess.
