Whining

A Whine for Wednesday

(As composed for Phantom’s Wednesday Whining, to be sung to the tune “Silver Bells”)

On a Tuesday, in December,
I am driving my car
When a head-turning twinge grabs my focus.
It’s the left side of my neck, friends,
And it’s swelling in lumps;
As I pass your street corner, you’ll hear:

Swollen glands, swollen glands
It’s sickness time at the Songbird’s
How they ache, it’s not fake!
Soon it will be Christmas day

I can feel them while I’m sleeping
And I wake in the night
Wondering how one pink pill a day cures this.
Presents not bought, cards unwritten
This is Songbird’s nightmare
And the work left for church scares her, too!

Swollen glands, swollen glands
It’s sickness time at the Songbird’s
How they ache, it’s not fake!
Soon it will be Christmas day

So my friends, please, head the warning,
If you notice you’re not
Feeling quite at your best in this season.
See the doctor, drink your fluids,
Get a nap on the couch,
So that you won’t join in on my song:

Swollen glands, swollen glands
It’s sickness time at the Songbird’s
How they ache, it’s not fake!
Soon it will be Christmas day

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Even in your sickness you bring healing. Lynn and I have been sitting here singing your song and laughing for the first time in many days.
    God bless.

  2. Be on the lookout from Prairie Home Companion phone call. I can tell it’s in your future.
    and the next verse…
Songbird’s been sick, but she heals quick,
With her smarts and her wit.
    Who wants to finish this?

  3. Being miserably lacking in gifts poetical, all I can say is get well soon! Like Kathy,I am in awe of your poetry written whilst sick. No fun to be sick right now. There’s another icky bug making the rounds here at Big Old Seminary, and some of the profs are even down for the count (but not so down that we skip finals).

  4. Oh dear I seem to have come out in sympathy- swollen glands and sneezes- sending healing prayers your way and hoping they’ll come full circle!!!
