Relationships

Goodnews

In a case of more good news than I can stand, almost, I am going to have a seminarian intern this coming school year. I’m sure we will develop a blog pseudonym in time, but for today we’ll just call him Goodnews. We already get along beautifully. Goodnews and his partner, WorkswithKids, live not far away from us, right next door to a nice young couple who previously rented the Methodist parsonage on my block. Small world, isn’t it?

Goodnews and WorkswithKids were invited by the young couple to a birthday barbecue not long ago, and the situation became awkward when one of the guests did not understand their relationship. Hearing the word “partners” applied to them, Clueless Lady assumed it was a business relationship. When it was explained that their relationship was personal, not business, Clueless Lady assumed they were father and son, which Goodnews told me hurt the feelings of the older WorkswithKids. Something in his imitation of Clueless Lady’s tone sounded familiar to me. Have any of you been with me long enough to remember this story? Yes, Clueless Lady is the neighbor who once asked The Princess, “Do you have a Bible at home?”

The hostess of the barbecue finally took Clueless Lady aside and said, “They’re gay.”

Clueless Lady looked amazed, and she exclaimed, “The father *and* the son?!?!!”

How I wish I had been there to say, “Yes, and the Holy Spirit, too!!”

  1. Great story. I am SO HAPPY for you to have someone to team up with. Makes a huge difference, especially if he’s fun/has a sense of humor/is smart. Added feature is the partner. Enjoy.

  2. That’s really funny, even at 5:19 on a Saturday morning after being awake almost an hour and a half.
Have I mentioned that miss m is having sleep issues? (Yes, RM, only about 800 times.)

  3. Songbird, love, I’ve just spluttered tea all over my keyboard….that is utterly wonderful!
I do indeed remember that lady’s earlier appearance in these pages….clearly she’s learned little in the intervening months.

  4. wow, i’ve run into some clueless people in my time (haven’t we all), but that takes the cake! i can never think of snappy reponses like that until after the situation, when i’m home, in bed, replaying my day…

  6. Now I really DONT understand….my screen blanked, then reappeared with a comment verification wotsit..so I duly tried again.
And now both attempts seem to have succeeded. Sorry about that.
    Brain fried, clearly.
