It was a Dark and Stormy Night

(A dramatic reading based on Mark 4, read at church today by Sons 1 and 2.)

One: It was a dark and stormy night,

Two: At the end of a long and tiring day.

One: People had been coming to Jesus, pressing him for healing, asking him questions.

Two: Today he finally got into a boat and pushed away, still speaking to the people on shore.

One: “A sower went out to sow, and as he sowed…”

Two: “Some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up.”

One: “Other seed fell on rocky ground…”

Two: “Other seed fell among thorns…”

One: “Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain.”

Two: And he said, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!”

One: We tried to listen, but we did not understand him.

Two: He kept on explaining

One: Or trying

Two: Even when speaking quietly to us, his voice sounded strained.

One: Preaching from a boat to a restless, excited crowd is not easy!

Two: Finally he said, Let us go to the other side of the lake.

One: So we left the crowd behind

Two: And we took him with us in the boat

Both: Just As He Was.

One: He slept there in the back of the boat on a cushion.

Two: He needed rest!

One: And then it came

Both: The Storm

Two: A gale, really, wind blowing and waves coming over the side of the boat.

One: I feared we would be swamped.

Two: Naturally, we woke him.

One: How could he sleep through such a thing?!?!!

Two: I said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we might drown?”

One: He woke up and rebuked the wind.

Two: He said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!”

One: Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm.

Two: The storm was over, but we were still frightened.

One: He said to us, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Two: We *were* still afraid.

Both: Had we no faith?

One: We were awe-struck.

Two: How could our friend control the storm? Who was he?

One: All in, done for the day, asleep in the back of the boat, he arose.

Two: He arose and spoke and the wind grew still.

Both: He arose, just as he was.
