Holy Days

RevGal Friday Five: Decorations

Soon it will be the second Sunday of Advent, the day we usually go out for our Christmas tree. That is the beginning of the decorating process at our house. All the boxes will come down from the attic. I will realize the mantle needs dusting before we begin to arrange the nativity scene upon it. We will scheme where to hide the baby Jesus until Christmas Eve, hoping we don’t forget where we squirreled him away.

For this Friday morning, then, a few decorating questions:

1) Do you display a nativity scene, and if so, where?
Yes, a lovely wooden set that my grandmother purchased in the Holy Land. We display it as she did, on the mantle, wise ones coming from the East and shepherds from the other side, animals waiting in the middle, and Mary and Joseph somewhere on the road ahead of the shepherds.

2) Do you put a skirt under the Christmas tree? If so, what does it look like?
My mother made us a skirt out of white felt with images from my childhood neighborhood, including the pink stone church, our big yellow house, a representation of a favorite tree, and my beloved grey cat from childhood, Pinkle Purr. It’s getting a little worn out, but we will never stop using it.

3) Do you hang lights on the house or put them in your windows?
We don’t hang them outside. I do have some icicle lights for the windows, but they never made it in last year. I really prefer the electric candles, but cats tend to knock them over. I really hope we will get the lights up this year, as they are a brilliant hedge against the darkness.

4) White lights or colored lights on the tree? Big bulbs or the small, pretty ones? (I’m not biased…much.)
I like the small white lights, but I must admit the family likes the colored ones, and Pure Luck still rhapsodizes about the large, colored bulbs of his childhood (and mine, but I’m trying to forget them).

5) Do you have a tree topper? What sort? Who puts it on top of the tree?
Yes. She is a lovely folk art angel, a gift from my much loved mother-in-law, who died in 1998. For the past few years, Pure Luck has lifted The Princess to put the angel on top of the tree. Soon she will be tall enough to do it herself!

Please do take this and pass it along! Leave a comment here if you do it on your own blog.
