Unhappy Campers: update

Yesterday I met with our vet, who recommended a couple of interventions that might help with Baby and her pathological peeing problem. There are some anti-anxiety meds for cats, but Possible Future Veterinarian #2 Son objects to putting her on meds, and I agree but for my own reasons (I really can’t see pilling this nervous cat on a daily basis for an unspecified period of time that might be the rest of her natural life). We’re going to try a high-sided litter box in a different, hopefully safer-feeling location, complete with the softest and most expensive cat litter you can possibly imagine, as well as a product called Feliway that you either spray in the areas the cat likes to soil or plug into the wall as you would an air freshener. We’re going to try the latter option. Until that arrives, she is enjoying a relaxing vacation in the Bahamas (the basement, exceeding warm and quiet compared to the dog-filled portions of the house). Tomorrow morning, she’s going in for bloodwork to see if she’s a candidate for Buspar or Valium, should we need to go that far.

Meanwhile, here’s a little song about our situation, also posted at Phantom Scribbler’s Wednesday Whining thread.

(To the tune of Steal Away)

Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way…for Baby
Fe-li-way, Fe-li-way work
Or Baby cannot stay here.

Baby, she pee-pees,
she pee-pees on the laundry.
The pee-pee goes all over our clothes,
She ain’t got long to stay here.

Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way…for Baby
Fe-li-way, Fe-li-way work
Or Baby cannot stay here.

My doctor tells me
the Feliway works wonders
You plug it right into the wall
And cats become like…kittens.

Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way…for Baby
Fe-li-way, Fe-li-way work
Or Baby cannot stay here.

Baby is pretty,
but pee-pee isn’t pretty.
We’re going to try a new litter box,
And hope that she will use it.

Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way
Fe-li-way…for Baby
Fe-li-way, Fe-li-way work
Or Baby cannot stay here.

  1. LOL. The poem is perfect!
My sister-in-law had a cat that she had to put on Valium for the same reasons. In the end I think she took one herself for each one she gave the cat! Finally the cat ran away. That was a relief…

  2. QG, I was just telling Pure Luck that we needed to get a prescription for each of us. At least Young Dr. #2 Son can’t tell *me* not to take it!
