I woke up early this morning to finish working on my sermon. It was well underway: illustrations chosen, text explored in my mind, concluding sentence written, which is something I often do early in week to provide some direction.
But when I sat down at the computer, and puttered around with what I had for half an hour, I discovered to my horror that I hated these 1000 to 1200 words I had written. I suddenly knew that nothing except the title and that final sentence were going to make it to the pulpit this morning.
I started all over again.
After the service, the person who has heard more of my sermons than even our musician, someone who has never missed a Sunday since I arrived, said, “That was one of your top 5 sermons ever!!!”
Thanks be to God for the courage to hit “delete.”
