Jesus Walks

Last night I caught a few minutes of the Hurricane Relief Concert on the various networks, including Kanye West’s performance of “Jesus Walks.”

Gentle Readers, I am a pastor and a mommy, 44 years old, and even in my youth I was far from hip. Seriously, I’ve been to about two concerts that weren’t classical: Billy Joel (1980) and Peter, Paul and Mary (circa 1990). Songs about Jesus that I like include “O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee” and “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me.”

But this young man got to me, with the eclectic nature of the music, the violins being played on stage, the intense expressions on the singers’ faces and most of all, the words.

We ain’t going nowhere but got suits and cases
A trunk full of coke, rental car from Avis
My momma used to say only Jesus can save us
Well momma, I know I act a fool
But I’ll be gone till November I got packs to move, I Hope

(Jesus Walk)
God show me the way because the Devil’s tryna to break me down
(Jesus Walk with me)
The only thing that I pray is that me feet don’t fail me now
(Jesus Walk)
And I don’t think there is nothing I can do now ta, right my wrongs
(Jesus Walk with me)
I wanna talk to God but I’m afraid because we ain’t spoke in so long

Just to prove that I am still way uncool, I couldn’t bring myself to download the “explicit” version of the song from iTunes. Forgive me, Kanye, for choosing the “clean” one. Your expression is so authentic; believe me when I say I relate to it. Jesus walk with me–the only thing I pray is that my feet don’t fail me now.
